Taking pictures of the mayhem and destruction that ensues while devouring the first birthday cake is one of the best ways to celebrate. The aim of the birthday photography session is to take extraordinarily cheerful pictures that will surely put a smile on your face for years to come.

A treat for the parents, fun for the kids – a unique opportunity to capture the curiosity, the genuine character of your little one while the photo session is also a good reason to celebrate. Let the cake-mashing be a birthday party too! For a photographer it is one of the most entertaining jobs to report on the destruction of the cake and the smudged smile.

How the session goes

The most convenient solution for the family and the little one as well is if the child can „control” the events during the session. This way we can sometimes finish in a few minutes, or in other cases we have time to wait for the perfect shot. Some children go straight for the cake and smear it all over the set, while it is also common that the parents have to encourage the toddler. In other occasions, the little one is not fascinated by the cake at all, and will only bother with it if mommy or daddy plays along. You should prepare as if you were going to be included on the pictures as well – so wear matching or somewhat similar clothes. Do not be surprised if some cream or cake gets on your dress. The best pictures are shot when the whole family is covered in cake!

What to wear to a birthday photography session

• The most exciting part of the preparation is choosing the clothes. A general advice is to wear a simple, solid style. Here are some ideas:
• Pick clothing that harmonises with the style and colours of the cake;
• Frills, tulles and ribbons look fabulous on the pictures;
• Other accessories like headbands, necklaces and neat shoes will add some cute details to the birthday picture;
• Too dark, light or flamboyant colours are not good choices. Off-whites, pastels, or simple but light colours are the ones to go for;
• Choose a heavy-duty fabric that will not suffer from the cake;
•  Let all clothes be easy to wash.

Choosing the cake

Picking a birthday cake can be just as big of a challenge. I usually leave this task for the parents as they know their children’s taste and special dietetic needs best. This way the cake will surely be a pleasant surprise! Some recommendations for your choice:

• Cakes of lighter colours (off-white or yellow perhaps) are easier to be photographed than darker ones. Not to mention they look much better on your children’ faces!
• The blindingly white icing is hard to capture properly – choose off-white or other light colours instead.
• The decoration should be intriguing and colourful – stripes and spots work well on a picture.
• Fashionable cupcakes are cheaper substitutes for a traditional cake. These muffin-size delicacies fit perfectly in the hands of a one-year-old!

Birthday parties

If the session will take place during a birthday party, it is worthwhile to get away from all the noise and the crowd for a short period of time, so the birthday boy or girl will not be distracted from the cake. A calm environment helps the photographer as well to focus on the subject, and the picture will only include the two most important things: the child and the cake. I will also happily take on the task of documenting the whole party itself, which will include the destruction of the cake as an element. I am particularly delighted if the pictures help remember this joyful day, even after many-many years!
