Pregnancy is full of surprises and challenges. Your body goes through a great deal of change, so it is completely understandable if you are unsure about the photoshoot. A session with a professional photographer should be a pleasant experience and an entertaining opportunity while expecting a baby.
I have kids too, so I am fully aware of the comfortable postures, the optimal lighting and the finishing touches that will be necessary. It doesn’t matter if we are taking the pictures for you and your other half only or if you would like to show them to family and friends, the details are what matter the most when it comes to pregnancy photos.
Professional maternity photos redefine the concept of beauty. The aim is to show the gracefulness of the woman expecting a baby. It helps you and your partner experience the excitement of this miraculous period. You cannot possibly imagine how much you will adore these pictures later on.
The best time for the maternity photo session is the 7th or 8th month of your pregnancy. By then, the tummy will grow enough to be advantageous for the picture. Expectant moms are usually in their best shape during these months. In some occasions, the oedema and gaining of weight occurring in the last weeks can make it hard for the mother to move around. The ideal time is a little later with your first baby and a little earlier with the second. What should you wear?
Simple and comfortable clothes! Avoid large pieces with patterns; choose a top that emphasises your tummy. It is important for you to be able to sit and stand comfortably. I take maternity pictures in lingerie or even without any clothes on quite often during a session, or simply wrap the mother in a drape – you can choose these settings as well.
Studio or outdoors? Your own home perhaps? Each of these has their own benefits and disadvantages as well. My experiences show that working in the studio is the most advantageous: there isn’t any annoying audience, and the well-lit environment helps to get impeccable results. It is easier to change clothes as well.

The last and possibly most important step in a photoshoot for an expectant mother is giving the final touches. Pregnancy can take its toll on your skin, and we can’t let even the smallest flaws take the attention from showing your beauty. In order to get exceptional results, we need to use professional lighting, appropriate postures and carefully chosen clothes. In addition, the process of digital retouching plays a fundamental role in correcting these tiny imperfections. It is essential for the picture to remain natural after retouching.
Taking pictures of an expectant mother isn’t any different from any other forms of shooting portraits: the only principle is to be in your best shape. Do not try any new beauty products as they can have unexpected effects. Be rested, eat light and healthy dishes, drink as much water as you can in the days leading up to the session. Take time for yourself and your hair to be well-groomed. My professional make-up artist colleague can help you achieve the perfect look. Watch out for your hands and feet as well as they may show on the pictures!
Do you fear that you will still like more pictures than are included in the package? : -)
